TITLE: COMMUNITY OUTREACH LEAD
POSITION: 30 HOURS PER WEEK. The position is currently funded for two years.
COMPENSATION: $25-$30/HOUR ($39,000 to $46,800) PER YEAR DOE
LOCATION: Hybrid. Office location is 1765 SUTTER STREET, SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94115

ABOUT JAPANTOWN TASK FORCE (JTF)
The Japantown Task Force, Inc. (JTF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and revitalizing San Francisco’s historic Japantown—one of the last remaining Japantowns in the U.S. We lead community-driven planning, cultural preservation, and economic sustainability efforts, working closely with residents, city agencies, and local partners. Our major initiatives include the Japantown Cultural District, Peace Plaza Renovation, and Osaka Way/Buchanan Mall upgrades. We support inclusive, intergenerational leadership and public engagement to ensure Japantown remains a vibrant, culturally rich neighborhood for generations to come.

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Community Outreach Lead will
conduct community outreach on key Japantown issues, including, but not limited to the Peace Plaza Renovation, the Osaka Way Upgrades Project, the Reconnecting Communities initiative, activities of the Japantown Cultural District Visitor Center, and other projects. This position is funded, in part, by the 2-year planning grant “Reconnecting Communities” that will bring together Japanese American, Black, and Jewish leaders connected to the Western Addition neighborhood to reimagine the Geary Boulevard corridor between Laguna and Divisadero Street.
The ideal candidate will (1) be ready to embrace new and fluid challenges, (2) enjoy meeting new people, (3) be comfortable working with others from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Exceptional organizational, communication, and administrative skills, as well as a deep knowledge of Japanese language and culture are required. Fluency in Japanese is strongly preferred.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Develop and distribute weekly newsletters that showcase events and activities of the Japantown Cultural District. Gather event information from Japantown-serving organizations on a regular basis.
Publicize and recap these events and activities on social media (i.e., Instagram, Facebook) through multiple posts per week. Summarize engagement statistics on a monthly basis.
Visit Japantown merchants in-person monthly to update them on key developments with the Peace Plaza, Osaka Way, and other major projects.
Gather survey data, in-person and online, from Japantown merchants, residents, workers, shoppers, volunteers, and others related to land use, transportation, housing, and other neighborhood-wide priorities.
Organize town hall meetings and focus groups related to the Reconnecting Communities project. Develop Eventbrite invitations, manage outreach lists, conduct follow-up via email, in-person, and outreach flyers to maximize participation.
Supervise and staff outreach and information booths at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival of Northern California, the Nihonmachi Street Fair, and other community events.
Manage a roster of volunteers through regular newsletter outreach. Plan volunteer meetups.
Supervise college and young professional interns.
Work closely with the Executive Director and Deputy Director on grant reporting requirements, including quantitative and qualitative measures of community engagement.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
At least three years of related work experience.
Demonstrated experience in outreach activities (organizing town halls, focus groups, developing and distributing newsletters, etc.).
Proficiency with the Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google tools (Calendar, Drive, Doc, Sheets, Slides).
Demonstrated experience with Zoom and managing hybrid meetings.
Solid organizational, communication, and administrative skills.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated sensitivity to racial, ethnic, social, and economic diversity.
Ability to lift 20 lbs for outreach events, inventory, and supplies.
Language ability in Japanese is strongly preferred.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Compensation for this position is $25-$30/hour ($39,000 to $46,800/year), based on experience. JCYC offers a generous benefits package including:
