Job Description Summary

The Director of Aquatics and Head Swimming and Diving Coach will be responsible for overseeing the planning, organization, and management of all aquatic programs and the overall operation of the athletic department pool. This includes overseeing the maintenance and operations of the pool facility, coaching the NCAA Division 2 Men and Women’s Swim and Diving Programs, pool memberships, pool rentals, and recreational swim activities. The Director will supervise staff, develop budgets, and ensure the safety and operational efficiency of aquatic facilities.

Essential Duties

Aquatics Director

  • Develop, implement, and manage all aquatics programs (e.g., swim lessons, pool rentals, recreational swimming).
  • Supervise and support Aquatics staff, including coaches, instructors, lifeguards, and other personnel.
  • Ensure safety protocols and emergency procedures are followed at all times.
  • Maintain and evaluate program schedules, equipment, and facility needs.
  • Develop and manage the aquatics department budget, ensuring financial sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with community partners and organizations.
  • Manage all aspects of aquatic facility operations, including maintenance, staffing, and scheduling.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to aquatic programs.

Swimming and Diving Coach

  • Conduct practice and game coaching in compliance with the University and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Provide appropriate leadership, direction and supervision relevant to the academic progress and personal development of student-athletes.
  • Prepare effective game strategies; use proven and effective coaching techniques; design and coordinate practice sessions.
  • Create, present, and maintain records of up-to-date lesson plans for pre-season/season practice drills and procedures detailing the desired goals to be achieved.
  • Schedule practice and game preparation sessions; conduct post-game analysis and incorporate it into practice plans.
  • Work with Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for in and out of season strength & conditioning workouts.
  • Respond effectively to concerns expressed by student-athletes about athletic and nonathletic issues.
  • Commit to the off-season with regards to recruiting, current player management, upcoming budget, scheduling, etc.
  • Maintain recruiting database with up-to-date contact information for prospective students and coach contacts, as well as a record of all communications and interactions with recruits.
  • Support, oversee, and lead the Assistant Coaches.

Other Duties

  • Attend all Athletic Department coach’s meetings. Complete all paperwork in a timely manner regarding rosters, purchase orders, meal expenses, eligibility forms, reimbursements, end-of-season reports.
  • Aid the Athletic Training and Athletic Communications departments in getting material (from players or coaches) that they need.
  • Arrange all transportation, food and lodging for away games.
  • In charge of distribution, collection, and inspection of all related equipment.
  • Assure that team presents a positive image both externally and on campus.
  • Committed to attracting and retaining a diverse staff.
  • Support other teams, and other Athletic units (Athletic Communication, Athletic Training).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 5+ years coaching experience at the intercollegiate, Club, or professional level. Experience in coaching and knowledge of the fundamentals, tactics and strategies of coaching swimming and diving with ability to recruit talented players for the program.
  • Certified Pool Operator License required.
  • Lifeguard/CPR/AED Certification required.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and management qualities, with a commitment to developing and maintain a positive and productive playing environment for all team members.
  • Proven ability to provide mentoring and leadership to student-athletes and a commitment to student athlete welfare.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to NCAA/conference rules and requirements relevant to the conduct of an intercollegiate program.
  • Knowledge of athletic recruitment methods and techniques.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent analytical, time management and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work and/or travel, including evening, weekend or limited overnight assignments.
  • Holding and maintaining a valid, unrestricted United States driver’s license, with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley’s insurance carrier is preferred.

Work Environment

  • The work environment includes standard office time, but more often time is spent working in non-traditional hours on the pool deck.
  • A significant amount of time is also spent at traveling tournaments for recruiting purposes and other pools/training facilities; training may occur outside normal business hours including evenings and weekends.
