Position Overview The Mayo Clinic Health System (MCHS) seeks a visionary, strategic and inspirational leader to serve as the Chair of the Hematology-Oncology department. The chair will lead MCHS to Category of One across the Hematology-Oncology practice. With an administrative and nursing partner, the chair is responsible for defining and implementing a strategic plan to ensure quality, safety, efficiency, patient experience and staff satisfaction. The chair will develop forward-looking models and grow the research and education portfolios. The role is preferably located in Eau Claire, WI or Mankato, MN and represents the MCHS perspective within the broader Mayo Clinic institution. Primary Responsibilities Provide leadership and collaboration to fulfill the objectives for the Hematology-Oncology department in MCHS, including development and implementation of the strategic plan and operational performance using a Now, Near, Far approach. Work with state and site-based chairs to provide operational, clinical and financial oversight; track results toward departmental performance measures and ensure responsible resource allocation for financial sustainability. Develop a consistent standard of care across MCHS by disseminating best practices. Provide leadership to MCHS physician colleagues, including recruitment, development, mentoring, succession planning, and keeping leadership informed of performance. Promote staff satisfaction, engagement and a culture of recognition; maintain regular onsite presence and cultivate mentorship and open dialogue. Promote Mayo values and the Mayo Model of Care; foster diversity and enabling people to develop their talents. Communicate institution-wide and department-level issues to MCHS leadership. Collaborate with Mayo Clinic Rochester residency/fellowship programs to grow partnerships and train staff for careers in MCHS. Lead development of MCHS-based cancer training programs (GME, medical student rotations). Collaborate on strategic initiatives to optimize cancer care delivery in community-based medicine, integrating in-facility, home-based, and virtual care. Represent MCHS on relevant Mayo Clinic committees and councils. Lead implementation of cancer genomic testing for MCHS patients to facilitate state-of-the-art care. Desired Outcomes Elevate Hematology-Oncology Practice to Category One as a premier integrated service within MCHS, focusing on quality, safety, efficiency, patient experience and staff satisfaction. Expand access to high-quality cancer care through strategic service expansion and collaboration with Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. Build and expand a Cancer Clinical Trials Program across MCHS, enabling access to state-of-the-art trials for community settings. Integrate and coordinate care across MN, WI, and IA to align with the Mayo Clinic care model while ensuring fiscal health and high-quality patient care. Ideal Experience & Qualifications The Chair must be an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D., clinically and scientifically active, and remain so during tenure. Must be board-certified in hematology/oncology and hold current academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The candidate should have a successful leadership role in academic medicine or community healthcare, with a proven track record in expanding oncology/hematology services, recruitment, team building, strategic planning, and decision-making across clinical, research and financial domains. Strong strategic planning, interpersonal, leadership and communication abilities are essential. Experience with integrating research, clinical care, and patient services in evolving healthcare is required. Prior experience with NCI-sponsored, industry-sponsored or investigator-initiated trials is preferred. Familiarity with regulatory requirements, patient recruitment, and biomarker-driven trial design is beneficial. A track record of publishing and presenting at conferences is valued. The chair is expected to recruit for and grow research within the program. Qualifications: MD, DO or foreign degree equivalent with eligibility for licensure in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
