Part-Time | 1099 Independent Contractor
We are seeking a qualified and dedicated Remote Sign Language Interpreter to provide real-time virtual interpreting services to deaf and hard-of-hearing students in K12 educational settings across Ohio . This position supports equal access to instruction and communication by interpreting classroom lessons, school activities, and one-on-one or small group sessions via video conferencing platforms.
As a vital member of the educational team, the interpreter will collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to ensure effective and accessible learning experiencesall delivered remotely from your home or secure location.
Interpretation Services :
Provide accurate, real-time American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation of spoken English during classroom instruction, discussions, assessments, and extracurricular activities.
Interpret in various formats (one-on-one, small groups, whole-class) depending on student needs.
Preparation & Collaboration :
Review lesson plans and materials in advance to prepare for interpretation.
Collaborate with teachers and special education teams to ensure communication strategies align with students' IEP or 504 Plan goals.
Support Student Access :
Facilitate communication between DHH students and peers, educators, and school staff.
Ensure the students full participation in classroom activities and access to academic content.
Professionalism & Confidentiality :
Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical interpreting standards.
Participate in IEP or team meetings when requested to support communication planning.
Education :
High school diploma required; associates or bachelors degree in interpreting or related field preferred.
Certification/Licensure :
Valid Ohio Interpreter License from the Ohio Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (for educational interpreters).
RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) certification or EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) score of 3.5 or higher strongly preferred.
Experience :
Minimum of 1 year of school-based or educational interpreting experience.
Prior experience with virtual or remote interpreting is a strong plus.
Technical Proficiency :
Ability to work effectively on secure video conferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet).
Familiarity with captioning, remote interpreting protocols, and educational technology tools.
Strong expressive and receptive ASL communication skills
Professionalism, reliability, and cultural competence in DHH education
Ability to adapt interpreting techniques to meet student age and language development level
Understanding of IDEA and accessibility in school settings
