**JOB SUMMARY**:Under immediate supervision, provides primary care of routine husbandry and sanitation for medical education and research animals; assists with or performs technical procedures to maintain lab animal health, departmental facility accreditation, and research integrity.The Sengupta lab is looking to hire a full-time Laboratory Animal Technician (Research) to contribute to molecular biology and/or electrophysiology experiments and animal husbandry. Our lab uses the zebrafish model system to study the function and development of neurons in the spinal cord and brainstem in an effort to understand how movements are coordinated and how this coordination develops with age. We use a combination of molecular biology, electrophysiology, optogenetics and behavior imaging to achieve our goals.**Primary Job Responsibilities:**Animal care: The candidate will perform basic fish husbandry duties, regeneration and maintenance of fish lines, genotyping, and creating transgenic fish lines.Under general supervision, the candidate will assist the principal investigator by conducting experiments according to established protocols. Responsibilities include performing routine lab equipment maintenance, setting up and operating various scientific apparatus, assisting with research projects, and conducting independent research.*This position is being funded by a grant and/or designated source and therefore continuation in the position is contingent upon funding availability.***PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:*** Provides diligent and responsible animal care; feeds and waters animals; changes and cleans cages; sanitizes equipment and facilities.* Records and/or reports animal abnormalities including altered eating, drinking, waste elimination, altered behavior, superficial lesions, and/or death.* Assists with technical procedures including record keeping, animal identification, tattooing, breeding, sexing, collecting specimens, preparing diets, and euthanasia.* Records and/or reports environmental abnormalities.* Provides routine physical maintenance of assigned areas.* Performs other duties as assigned.* Assists with select molecular biology experiments as needed.* **Some weekends and holidays are required for animal care.**## **KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**:***** Animal handling and general knowledge of species-specific behavior* Time management skills* Interpersonal/human relations skills* Verbal and written communication skills* Attention to detail* Ability to collaborate* Team player* Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds)* Ability to operate automated watering systems, cagewasher and autoclaves* Ability and willingness to wear protective clothing or equipment as required## **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**:***** High school diploma or equivalent and Associates degree; supplemented with one (1) year of related experience## **PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS**:***** American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification preferred.* Veterinary technician certification (e.g. AHT, CVT, RVT).* Bachelor's degree in biology or neuroscience or a related field.**Work Schedule Expectations:**40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, and select weekends and holidays as needed **Department:** Biology**On-Campus Location:** Macelwane Hall, 3507 Laclede Ave, St. Louis, MO 63103 **Full-Time Benefits:**Saint Louis University offers a robust benefits package, such as tuition remission benefits for full-time employees and their dependents, comprehensive health coverage, generous retirement plans, and paid time off.
