Job Description Summary

The Chaplain is professionally trained to assess and respond to the spiritual needs of patients, family, and staff. Spiritual Care may include but is not limited to: visitation, prayer, spiritual support, emotional and grief processing, providing appropriate resources including sacred texts, bereavement materials, prayer books or contact information. The Chaplain is to offer a healing presence to those who seek comfort.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participates as a full member of the health care team and provide timely spiritual, religious, and emotional care to patients, visitors, and colleagues based on thorough spiritual assessments, referrals, requests, and consults from the interdisciplinary team.
  • Provides spiritual support through non-anxious presence, religious care, emotional processing, life review, grief processing, sacred readings, music, prayers, sacraments, rituals, etc.
  • Rounds in assigned patient care areas to foster interdisciplinary collaboration in meeting the needs of care recipients.
  • Documents all care provided in the Electronic Health Record to provide clear communication about the patient’s spiritual care needs while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participates in committees, rounds, and meetings as appropriate or assigned.
  • Has the knowledge and skills to provide culturally competent, interfaith care to patients, loved ones, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Offers timely and proficient ministry with patients and loved ones in times of urgent need, such as emergencies, worsening clinical status, or impending death.
  • Works with staff to enhance their awareness of the spiritual needs of patients and families who are experiencing a crisis, loss, a new diagnosis or terminal illness.
  • Demonstrates positive communication skills, teamwork, and collegiality among peers and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, qualitative improvement initiatives, and continuing education opportunities.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to learn and utilize new technology or procedures that continue to develop in their role and throughout the organization.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Education - Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Theology or Pastoral Counseling
  • Masters of Divinity or equivalent from an accredited seminary or theological school is preferred
  • Successful completion of at least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

     

Minimum Work Experience

  • One to three years of pastoral experience.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with multidisciplinary health care professionals, patients, families, colleagues, and religious leaders
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Respectful of all backgrounds and practices while caring for people of all religious traditions, as well as those with none
